As authentic as it can get

After a cold day we were looking for something warm and inviting. While walking through the charming De Pijp neighbourhood we stumbled upon Nanxiang Soup Dumplings. My partner immediately noted this is actually a chain straight out of Shanghai, the original home of soup dumplings. We obviously decided to go in and try it.

We opted to order their signature crabmeat & pork dumplings, a wonton soup and a rice cake with chicken dish. We were enchanted by the background music composed of chinese pop and rock music that gave my partner some home sickness. The food came quickly (no more than 10 minutes) and the service was optimal.

The wonton was filled with a combination of pork and maroon, the strong flavour of the vegetable might not be for everyone but there are plenty of other options to choose from. For us it was perfect. The soup dumplings were filled with soup and the crab just added that extra kick of flavour to the classic pork soup dumplings. Finally the rice cakes where not too chewy and very well seasoned, the chicken was tender and the vegetables where crispy but at the same time soft.

The only problem to point out was that the price were a little steep for the type of restaurant it is, 7 euros for a half liter of water and 16 euros for 6 dumplings. However I guess that’s the price to pay for having chinese food in Amsterdam that is better than some food in china.

Note: 9.5/10
